Nigeria's Super Eagles World Cup Hopes Dashed As They Lose On Penalties To DR Congo With A Scoreline Of 4-3

The Super Eagles of Nigeria's 2026 World Cup hopes have been dashed after losing out to DR Congo on penalties with a scoreline of 4-3 at the African WCQ Playoffs Final on Sunday, November 16, 2025. The match took place at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

Midfielder Frank Onyeka netted in an early goal in the first half of the game to give Nigeria the lead but few minutes later, DR Congo's Mechak Elia scored an equalizer in the 32nd minute to draw Nigeria a tad back.

The game then finished in a 1-1 draw after normal and extra time.

Nigeria wasn't that lucky with the penalty shootouts as the Leopards of DR Congo won Nigeria 4-3 to pick Africa’s one and only ticket for the intercontinental play-offs slated for March next year.

Nigeria had whooped Gabon 4-1 to get to this level while DR Congo defeated Cameroon with a scoreline of 1-0.

Nigeria will now focus all of its attention on the 2025 AFCON, slated for Morocco in December.
